A Positive Reason To Live By The Ocean

Good evening!  How’s everyone’s Wednesday going?  Mine has been pretty good although I’ve been trying hard not to think about how this is my last day of Christmas break!  It’s back to the ‘ol grind tomorrow :(.  Yes, I know how lucky I am to get so much time off, and I can feel you all playing violins for me right now!

I’m posting a little later than normal today, and I have a really good reason.  I have found a new obsession.  I’ve spent all day immersed in the first season of Downton Abbey.  Once again I was a little late to the party, but now I’m here and I’m not leaving!  You guys, this show is so good!  I’ve wanted to get into it for awhile, and, since my mom got the first two seasons for Christmas, I finally had my chance!  Unfortunately, Mom would only let me steal the first season so I have totally been left hanging.  Not to worry-I’m going home this weekend and I’m definitely swiping the second season!

In other news, it’s What I Ate Wednesday.  I purposely didn’t show you many of my eats from Houston last week so that I could share them today so let’s get started!

Even when I’m out of town, life wouldn’t be quite right if I didn’t start my day with oatmeal.  Hampton Inn is always our hotel of choice, and I am so glad they’ve started offering hot oatmeal on their breakfast buffet as opposed to the packet.  As always, I topped it with an apple, and I even brought along some of my Peanut Butter & Co. to mix in.  Right now, I’m working on the Mighty Maple flavor and it is so good!

You know one of my favorite things to do while in a big city is to wander around nice groceries stores.  Who says I don’t know how to have a good time?  We found ourselves in one around lunch time so John and I decided to hit up their salad bar.  They had so many great options to choose from, and I loaded mine down!

While I was perusing the aisles of the grocery store, I noticed this.

I’m a huge fan of Luna bars, but I hadn’t heard of the fiber ones before.  I grabbed a Peanut Butter Strawberry, and had it for a snack later in the day.  It was so good!  This bar is a soft peanut butter shell with a strawberry center.  Wow!  I think these would be great for hiking because they shouldn’t melt like regular Luna bars do.

I told you guys last week that we ate at T-Bone Tom’s, a Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives location, while we were in Houston, and I gave you a sneak peek with the armadillo eggs.  They were so good, but I’m glad I didn’t fill up on them because I had some seriously good eats headed my way.

I ordered the broiled shrimp that was served over rice with a side of corn.  I’m always a fan of shrimp and this was especially delicious.  Of course being so close to the ocean made a difference in the quality of seafood.  I guess there are a few good reasons to live near the ocean ;).

John and I always enjoy finding some great local food whenever we travel, and Houston did not disappoint.  One thing we noticed while there was all the great restaurants that seemed to be on every corner.  I can’t wait to go back and check a few more out!  Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have one more episode of Season 1 :).  Happy Wednesday!

shrimp is my favorite thing to order when I am out because I rarely cook it or buy it for myself. I am with you on finding local stores when I am new places, I feel like I can always find new foodie finds that make me very happy.

Growing up only 15 minutes from the beach (5 minutes from the bay), I truly missed fresh seafood when I was in college in central Alabama. Fresh seafood is so much better than the frozen/pre-frozen stuff! Glad you enjoyed your meal!

Looks like such a great day of eats…I love hitting up grocery stores for their salad bars too. I feel like it’s not something people normally consider as a lunch option, but it’s so good! And I’m so glad you joined the Downton Abbey party! I was late too, a few weeks ago. I obviously blew through both seasons in a few days. Season 3 premiere is Sunday! Hurry! haha

Downton Abbey is amazing! I am on the second season but had to stop to wait for my family to catch up. Every episode seems like it has a cliffhanger!

So when we get together, I’m hoping that you pick an absolutely AMAZING restaurant for dinner!! My food-loving soul is in your ever-capable hands, my dear!!

I haven’t seen that type of Luna bar before either. Interesting! I had to laugh when you talked about adding your own stuff to breakfast–I totally do the same thing when we travel–with little packets of peanut or almond butter and chia seeds. :)

Hotel breakfasts have come a long way, but they still need a little outside help 😉 The Luna Bar was really good. I also picked up a Chocolate Raspberry to try the next day. It was yummy, but the peanut butter is definitely my favorite. I also saw a Blueberry Vanilla so I’ll have to try that next!

Whoa, my boyfriend and I JUST started Downton Abbey last night. It was a hoot as we were trying to figure out the characters and their ties to one another…and my boyfriend was teasing me because I was already so invested in the characters that I cried when the blonde maid found Bates crying in his bedroom. I have a soft spot for veterans! I think I said, “People can be so cruelllll” as tears rolled down my cheeks. Talk about getting invested after one 50-minute episode! Hahaha.

Your Houston eats look delish! I, too, LOVE going into random grocery stores. It reminds me of the camping vacations I took when I was younger. My parents would have to stock up, and my sister and I would race around and look at all the new treats and explore the new layout. Looks like a great trip, Natalie!
