I Live Without Closet Doors…

……..which pretty much sums up my attitude towards my house.  But it’s the topic of Friend Makin’ Mondays, and you guys know I love to play along!

Before we get to it, did you guys notice the new header?  That’s courtesy of Jenny-isn’t it great?  I’m totally in love with it!  Now, on to the main event…

John and I moved into our little house right before our wedding three years ago (three years next week!).  We had all kinds of trouble when it came to buying a house.  It’s a long somewhat horrifying story so I won’t bother you all with it.  Let’s just say that our house is definitely a fixer-upper ;)

We spent the majority of the first year fixing the absolutely necessary things.  We ripped out a bathroom, fixed foundation, put in new windows….the list is intense!  Then we got the point where things were comfortable.  Not finished, but comfortable.  And herein lies the problem.  John and I both have zero interest in home improvement.  Sure, I want things to look nice and be upgraded, but I have no desire to actually do the work!  I’d much rather go do something fun on my weekends!

Every few months we do a little something else, but we probably do need to get it in gear when it comes to home renovations.  Maybe we could if we would stop spending all our money on hiking gear and vacations……

Inside Your Home

1. Do you live in an apartment/condo, townhouse or house?  House
2. What is your home’s coolest feature? Honestly, I think it’s the bookshelves we put in a few years ago.  They are beautiful!  We still need to make some minor adjustments so that our media equipment will fit inside, but they are definitely my favorite feature.
3.  Do you enjoy DIY projects?  If so, what are you working on now?  I do not dig DIY.  You’ll have to hit up my sister for that.  Although John is getting pretty good as certain DIY projects.  Care if I brag a bit?  He’s started making Adirondack chairs, and look how good he’s getting!
4. When using the dishwasher do you use powder detergent or liquid?  Liquid…always liquid!
5. Do you have a TV in your bedroom?  I bet you all know the answer to this!  Of course we do!  We like to go to bed as soon as we deem socially acceptable and watch TV from our room the rest of the night.  Let’s be clear that what we deem socially acceptable is probably not what most people would.  Yep, we roll like that.
6.  Is your range gas or electric?  Electric, but one of these days when we completely gut the kitchen, it’s gas all the way!
7.  How often do you sweep/mop/vacuum?  I sweep the kitchen about every other day, mop once a week, and vacuum once a week.  I try to talk John into vacuuming as often as I can because I loathe it.  I don’t know why, but it’s absolutely my least favorite chore.
8.  What is your favorite place to shop for home furniture and accents? As you can probably tell, I don’t really do much shopping for those sort of things.  When I do buy stuff for the house, I prefer to buy interesting, original things or funky stuff from our travels.
9.  Do you decorate for holidays?  I love to decorate for Christmas!!  It’s really the only holiday I put stuff out for, but Christmas is my time of year.  There are probably even going to be two trees in the Ford household this year :)
10.  If you could have HGTV come in and redo one room in your home which room would you choose?  This is a no contest question.  It’s the kitchen without a doubt.  I love to cook and it’s the room I spend the most time in.  Not to mention that very little has been done to my kitchen since the house was built in 1965.  Yeah, tell me about it…
That’s all, folks!  I hope you’ve enjoyed this installment of Friend Makin’ Mondays courtesy of Miss Kenlee.  I’ll be back tomorrow with another very important public service announcement!
What is your favorite room in your house? Do you enjoy home improvement projects?  Care to share any tips?

I’m totally obsessed with the Christmas season too! My family literally watched A Christmas Story last night (not making that up at all). And I grew up without a closet door too, so my closet was always super neat and organized since you could see everything. I have closet doors now, but it’s still very organized. No surprise there :) haha

It’s that OCD! The closet doors have sort of become a joke among our friends and family. Who knows if we’ll ever get around to putting them in!

I nearly cried with jealousy when I saw that bookshelf!! My condo will be built and ready for move-in in just over a year, and you’d better believe a rocking bookshelf like that will be the first thing I invest in building in!
I hate vacuuming too — our vacuum is older than I am and weighs at least half what I do! (Okay, slight exaggeration, but I call it Son-of-a-Mother-Bertha for a reason!) #noshame.
My favourite room in my house is the family room that we never use. The couch is comfy and it’s right in front of the fireplace and the screen door. So I can watch rainstorms in front of the fire in the fall, watch the snow in front of the fire in winter, and nap with the door open and a fabulous breeze in the spring.
I love your Monday posts — they always make me feel so much closer to you!! (Ps. LOVE the new banner!!)

Yay! THank you! I was so excited about the banner. That room sounds really nice. I especially love the idea of watching the snow in front of the fire. I LOVE snow, and, unfortunately, it’s not a regular thing for us.

Maybe I shouldn’t tell you that the bookshelf has an identical counterpart on the other side of the TV ;) I have one small problem-it’s almost full! I don’t know what I’m going to do!

Those are some intense renovations you guys did!
I adore the bookshelf, too! I am slightly obsessed with home libraries.
My favourite room is currently the bonus room, but it’ll be our living room once winter hits. It has a gas fireplace and is super cozy!

It was super intense which is why I think we’ve kind of come to a standstill now. We’re burnt out! I’m always jealous of home libraries-I’ve convinced John that if we ever build a house, I get to build wall to wall, floor to ceiling bookshelves in one room!

Neat banner! I love the bookshelves! We have some shelves at home, and it’s funny because my mom’s books (mostly literary fiction) take up three-quarters, and my dad’s books (history stuff) don’t have a lot of space. In terms of my new apartment, I really like my kitchen so far. There’s a good amount of room for cooking … and busting a move or two while I prepare meals and listen to music. :)

That’s great, Carrie. From what I’ve always heard about NYC apartments, your lucky if the kitchen is bigger than closet size! I can’t wait to see pictures!

Love the banner! That bookcase is awesome! I’d love to have a wall length bookcase in my house! As for my favorite place in my house, my bed? Does that count. I love coming home after a long day and just laying there!

That could also be a fortunate thing :) I keep trying to tell John we need to move somewhere that we could live in a condo. Less house to clean, less projects to do, and no yard to mow!

:) He loves it. He has a list of all kinds of projects. The other night we saw a commercial where a guy was hand-crafting a boat and he was all “I wish I could do that”. I’m now envisioning my garage being taken over at some point!

Congratulations! House living definitely has it’s advantages. The project side of things isn’t so fun, but when things get done is kind of makes it all worth it!

Great banner! We just did a total renovation last year and I have no desire to do that again but I am in love with our kitchen now so i guess it was worth it ;) Those chairs are awesome btw!

Thanks! I’m in love with the banner! We have a total kitchen renovation coming sometime in the near future, and I’m not looking forward to it. But, like you said, it’ll be worth it! I might have to repeat that mantra a zillion times!

Thank you! Having a small space would be tough…but I think I would like having less to clean!
