Yogi-in-Training

Happy Sunday!  The weekend is almost over, and I plan on relaxing the rest of the evening and soaking up every last second.  But I wanted to pop in for just a minute and give you guys my recap on my first week of yoga!  As you guys know, I’m participating in Courtney’s October Yoga Challenge, and it’s definitely been an experience this week.

october yoga challenge

I am completely new to yoga.  I have a taken a total of two one hour classes, and those happened about 5 or 6 years ago.  Yoga is not something that I’m proficient at just yet!  Not to mention the fact that I am not at all flexible.  I can’t even touch my toes!

Funny Confession Ecard: None of my yoga pants have ever been to yoga.

All of that being said, I’ve always wanted to get into yoga.  I love the idea of low-impact exercise, and, although I don’t do it enough, stretching is always feels so good.  Unfortunately, there’s nowhere in my town that offers yoga classes.

Enter Jillian!  I’ve always been a fan of hers.  All you have to do is look at the results she gets from the people she trains to know that she knows what she’s doing.  I had heard several people say good things about her Yoga Meltdown DVD so when Courtney announced her challenge, I knew it was the perfect time to give it a try.

My workout schedule was a little sporadic this week due to my traveling, but I did manage to work through Level I of the DVD twice this week.  I love it!  Jillian is really good at explaining the moves, and I liked that she had two different participants on the DVD.  One was advanced, and the other did modified moves you could follow if you were a beginner.

I’ve always been under the impression that yoga is more of a supplement workout than the main event, but that does not apply to this workout.  I was a sweaty mess by the end of it, and I’ve been sore all week!  It’s definitely motivated me to get more into the practice of yoga, and I can’t wait to build up enough strength so that I can try out Level II.  Jillian continues to impress!

In addition to this DVD, next week I plan on trying out another one that I have, as well as checking out some of the online resources.  I’ll let you know how it goes in next week’s recap!

It’s never too late to get started.  Check out the challenge on Courtney’s blog, and make sure you pop in over there tomorrow for her recap as well as the link-ups of everyone else participating.

Do you guys practice yoga?  Any DVDs or other resources you would recommend?

It’s always been hard for me to commit to yoga because I have to do it completely from a TV screen. I’ve always loved classes (of any kind-I’m a nerd like that) so I’ve shied away from it. But Jillian has made me a believer! I love it!

Yaya for yoga! My first time trying yoga was during my sophomore year of college after I “retired” from basketball; my body felt like it was going to break down, and my younger sister suggested giving yoga a shot. The classes at school were OK–my body began to heal and became more flexible– and once I got to NYC and found my yoga studio, I was totally hooked; I practiced five or six days a week! Not only did I have a stronger connection to my body, which was something I lacked during my years as an athlete, but I also felt happier, healthier, and much more at peace mentally. The following summer, I didn’t practice as much as I would’ve liked (maybe one or twice a week), and now, I’m excited to get into the groove again. :)

I’m excited for you! I can’t imagine what it would be like to practice at an actual yoga studio in NYC…I’ll have to take a class when I come visit ;)

A stronger connection to my body is something I definitely noticed just from the little bit I’ve done so far. It’s amazing how aware (mostly because those body parts hurt all week!) I’ve been. I can’t wait for my session this afternoon.

I love Jillian! I’ve never tried her yoga workouts but I definitely want to! I’m not surprised at all to hear that they’re challenging and make you a sweaty mess, that’s a signature Jillian workout right there! Haha

Wow! I didn’t even know there was a p90x yoga. I can just imagine though! I’ve heard crazy things about the workout!

I am doing the yoga challenge too! I had thought of yoga as a supplemental thing too, but the more intense ones are definitely complete workouts on its own. I’ve never done Jillian’s dvd’s but they sound super-intense. Good luck with week 2!
